Fluid Power Animates New Robots

Hydraulics and pneumatics are powering a number of cutting-edge robot designs. This report from Engineering360 examines three. One is a remotely operated robot that relies on a novel transmission combining hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Another is a pneumatically actuated robot hand that masters a new task by learning from past failed attempts to perform the task. And the third is a robot that performs surgeries under human supervision but without any human guidance. The surgical tool employed by this system is wielded by an off-the-shelf hydraulic arm.

Pizza Printing on Mars?

Pneumatics are being used to power a 3D food printer reportedly capable of creating pizzas of any type, shape, or depth without any human intervention. In addition to the obvious culinary applications here on Earth, such a device might one day be used to print up meals for astronauts on deep-space missions.

How Do Pneumatic Indexers Work?
Rotomation, Inc.

Our indexing actuator is a unique pneumatic device that reliably provides shaft rotation in precise steps in one direction without cumulative error. For repetitive rotary indexing, it is a low-cost substitute for a servo or stepper drive, and is controlled using a simple four-way directional control valve. Watch the video!

Modern Alchemy Using Hydraulic Pressure

University of Manchester researchers say new two-dimensional materials can be created using what they call a graphene hydraulic "nano-press." How does it work? Certain compounds are sealed between two atomically thin sheets of graphene, which is stronger than diamond. This great strength allows extremely high pressures to be exerted on the compounds between the graphene layers, thereby changing them into new crystals.
